It's that time again

...for a new year. As if you didn't already know that already! So it's time for my 2008 in review, slightly delayed because I've been sicker than sick with a cold that just won't quit.

My 2008 ended much like it began: I was sick and unemployed.

In between...
The very first thing that happened in 2008 was being laid off from my office job as a writer. I promptly got strep, and it took me a month to find another job, this time in retail. In February, my parents came to visit me in Virginia, and I began knitting samples.

I worked on my garden,escorted baby ducklings to the Potomac River, and dealt with some health issues. By the summer, I'd been promoted, but my personal life was going to hell.

In August, I went to visit Chicago. I finally got to meet Madam [who needs to post more] and Lynn in person (so wonderful) and discover some delightful things about having old friends.

Later in the fall, my parents came to visit again, I had another birthday, and participated in what will likely turn out to be one of the most important elections of my life. I decided to quit my job. And then suddenly, all my life got boxed up again and I had to say goodbye to lots of new friends before driving halfway across the country.

I got to spend the holidays with my family and I've been slowly getting to know my new neighborhood. I don't have a formal job as of yet, but at least this time it was my choice to make. I've found some more sample knitting to do, which will help fill in the gaps.

I now get to share my space with this predator - his name is Boots. Sometimes it's a bit of a challenge!

I miss lots of things about Virginia - I miss things about my house, things about the town I lived in, people. But at the same time I think I'm going to be very happy where I am now.

I've started 2009 thinking much the same things as when I started 2008: I hope this year will be better.

And oh yes, there's knitting - there was knitting, there will be knitting!

Here's to a happy (happier?) New Year.

Hoping that 2009 turns out to be a great one for you! I think the duck story was just great, so at least there is one huge positive from 2008. Good luck with your job search - I've been applying myself, and if it goes too long am thinking of just applying to temp agencies. That kitty is very cute, is he yours or are you cat sitting?

Escargot It was June 2010 and Kel, Danielle, and I were flying down the highway coming back to Alexandria from TNNA (the yarn industry trade show) in Columbus, Ohio. My 2012

In looking ahead to the new year, I've also been looking back a little. I was thinking about all the things I did for the first time (or first time in a very  long time) in 2012. Let's be honest, most of them are pretty insignificant, but that's okay. Firsts in 2012: Ran a mile (for the first time in over 10 years!)  Drove most of the way across the country (towing a trailer) Ate an oyster (raw!) Had a helicopter flying lesson That last one was on New Year's Eve and I am still pretty excited about it. As part of family Christmas, my sister-in-law offered all the family members a very brief flying lesson in a Robinson R22 - a very small helicopter. I was a little nervous but I know that she is very experienced and very safe. Liquorice Allsorts Socks

New socks yay! These have been my 'boring purse knitting' for a while and they are finally done! I had to re-knit the first sock, which was a major bummer, but serves me right for knitting all the way to the tip of the toe before trying it on. The yarn is Regia in one of the Kaffe Fassett designed stripe patterns. These are just basic 3x1 rib socks, 72 sts around, on US#1s. The colors reminded me of liquorice allsorts (not that allsorts have THAT much blue in them, but you get the idea) hence the name. I love the mismatched stripes Now to find my next easy socks to carry around!
